Review: New Luigi’s Gelato Sweet Cream Churro Flavor!

If you know Luigi’s Italian Ice, then get ready for the new Luigi’s Gelato Sweet Cream Churro flavor!

As mentioned on my New In Store: Luigi’s Gelato Flavors: Sweet Cream Churro, Mint Chocolate & Italian Cannoli, there are 2 other flavors available.

What is Gelato?

Gelato is the Italian equivalent of ice cream. However, it’s a common “joke” that some Italians find it insulting when gelato is compared to American ice cream because gelato is known for it’s creamier texture, stronger flavors, and higher quality & real ingredients.

Personally, I think each has its lovable traits but I will admit, real ingredients sure make any treat taste infinitely better than those with artificial flavors.

What is Italian Ice?

Italian Ice is the equivalent of granita or granita siciliana in Italy or sorbet in France. It’s finely ground ice with water, fruit, sugar or flavored syrups. It’s dairy free which makes it different from the American sherbet. Italian ice, sorbet and sherbet are often confused or used interchangeably even though they’re slightly different. What makes granita and sorbet different is how fine the ice is in granita, while in sorbetyou can feel the ice crystals when you eat it.

Rich & Creamy!

With a churro flavored ribbon!

~Description on the box and Luigi’s website.

Taste

This was an excellent ice treat. It was sweet and very creamy. It tasted like 100% sweetened condensed milk; I couldn’t tell if any other ingredients were added. The caramel ribbon was perfect. The flavor was strong and the texture was smooth; it wasn’t too hard or too sticky.

The only problem I had with this product was the “churro” flavor. There was too much condensed milk for me to find the cinnamon or doughy flavor of a churro. I looked at the ingredients and the caramel ribbon has both caramel and condensed milk so it makes sense that it was impossible to taste the cinnamon flavor at all.

Location

I got these at Woodman’s Market.

Would I buy Luigi’s Gelato Sweet Cream Churro flavor again?

Answer: No.

Worth Trying?: At least once.

The gelato is delicious and very creamy. Once I started eating it, it was hard to stop at just one. However, I didn’t really get the churro flavor from this and I found that rather disappointing. I was expecting a strong cinnamon taste but found caramel instead.

I recommend trying this regardless. I’m tempted to try the Italian cannoli.
